In my first blog, I spoke about how my first ESL lesson had gone. In this post, I would like to highlight three main skills that will help any new teacher who is starting out.
1: Have Confidence.
Believe in yourself! Have an abundance of self-belief; be confident in your ability to help students. I have experienced many occasions since my very first lesson where self-doubt has crept in. Sometimes, you will not get instant feedback, but if you believe that you can help your students improve and that comes across during your conversations, then as time goes on, you will both see the results.

2: Don’t always stick to a lesson plan.
Shocking, I know, but things can happen in your classes that you cannot control! Students will finish their activities too soon and some take longer than others. In some cases, certain things that you imagined to be easier for them aren’t, while in other cases, more difficult tasks end up being a breeze! It is more important to be flexible than to stick rigidly to something that just isn’t working.
3: It’s ok to say ‘ I do not know ‘
Another shock? There have been many times when students have asked me questions I couldn’t answer right away. I told them I would find out and get back to them. As long as you are honest, say you don’t know, and then send them an email with the answer, that’s fine!
If you like my posts and think they are helpful, then please share. Also, if you happen to want English lessons or know someone who does, then please contact me through website chat and book a free trial evaluation with me online or face to face. I will even make you a nice cuppa (a cup of English tea).
